At Orange County DUI check points the officers will be checking for drivers showing signs of alcohol and or drug impairment. They may conduct a field sobriety test. For those that fail will go to jail, vehicle impounded. So they will have to pay impound storage fees, license suspended, insurance rate increase, along with fine, fees and DUI classes. Some will also lose their jobs. It has been figured that one drinking and driving could cost you around $10,000 or more. The officers also stop athletes when leaving parties for drinking and driving. One of them in an SUV had four open bottles of alcohol. With that he got charged for three things. Underage possession of alcohol, DUI and driving violation for trying to go the wrong way on highway which is why they stopped him in the first place.

On one Friday checkpoint the police had the following statistics. They had 1005 vehicles go through the check point. They had 778 vehicles screened, 5 drivers given the sobriety test. They had 2 arrested for Dui, 34 driver licenses checked, wrote 19 tickets from no tail lights to no insurance. 5 unlicensed people and suspended license to court. They had 5 vehicles towed. A few months later a check point arrested 743 individuals drinking and driving.

These test allow the officer to observe the drivers balance, physical ability, attentiion level, or other factors like speech to determine if driver is impaired. Officers must record these test to hold up in court appeal. The idea of having a Dui check point is not hassle regular people but to get the drinking and driving people off the road for safety to save lives by keeping them from having an accident and harming or killing an incessant person. The police officers even ask for citizens to help by telling them about problem areas that they have seen aggressive drivers, Dui drivers. The officers are saying if you go out for dinner, fill your vehicle up or to the store and you see a reckless or drunk driver then pick up your phone call 911 report the type of vehicle, location and direction they were traveling. You might save a life maybe even your own or your families life.

In Orange county they are trying a new device on first time defenders. The Governor passed a law to use these new devices to stop drinking and driving start with first defenders. The motor vehicle department records show that 4 percent to 5 percent of first time offenders are involved in a second Orange County Dui incident either a crash or arrested within a year. Under the new laws the persons first conviction, the driver must have the ignition interlock installed for five months. A second offense could required 12 months, and the third 24 months. If the first offender is involved in an accident it is required for one year. Most drivers will have to pay for installation and monthly rental fees. Estimated installation cost is $75.00 and monthly monitoring cost $50.00 or more. These fees are reduced by 90 percent for lower income offenders.

With these devices the drivers will have to convince their own cars they are sober before getting on the road. They will have to blow into a tube and if the device detects alcohol it won’t start. Some devices the drivers has to do this every so offend to prove to the car and device that the driver is still sober and able to drive the vehicle.
